Description
The American Optical (AO Spencer) Model 73S microscope offers unprecedented ease of use in a fully functional, high-quality instrument. The microscope is sturdy and well-constructed, with clean lines enhanced by a gray finish pleasantly contrasted by the black stage, nosepiece (objective turret), and focusing knobs. The microscope is further accented by color-anodized objectives in green (10X) and yellow (43X). A unique innovation of this microscope is the single sensitive focusing adjustment which permits critical focusing by even the most inexperienced microscopist. The focusing mechanism amounts to a combination of coarse and fine focusing adjustments. Accidental dismantling of the instrument is eliminated by the locked-in 10X eyepiece and control knobs. This microscope offers all metal construction in slideways as well as in all mechanical parts, a major factor in assuring long-term, trouble-free service. Another feather normally associated with high priced instruments is the smoothly working inclination joint which permits tilting the microscope, as desired. STAGE : The stage has a durable black finish which is resistant to common laboratory chemicals. Two stainless steel slide clips are provided, and are locked on to prevent loss. SUBSTAGE : Excellent illumination control is made possible by the five clearly-identified apertures (diameters from 1/16” to 5/8”). Apertures are located in a revolving disc diaphragm. Ease of rotation of the diaphragm is provided by the knurled periphery which extends slightly beyond the edge of the stage, and aperture opening is assured by a click stop which indicates each opening. MIRROR : A gimbaled, concave mirror is supplied with the microscope. BODY : The monocular body with fixed tube length of 160 mm accommodates standard diameter eyepieces. The eyepiece is locked in place by means of a removable set screw. The microscope is well built, sturdy, and solid. NOSEPIECE (OBJECTIVE TURRET): The microscope is equipped with a dual objective adapter nosepiece. The revolving nosepiece has ball-and-groove stop springs to assure definite centering of each objective. OBJECTIVES : Crisp, clear images and full size fields of view are provided by the 10X and 43X objectives. These objectives are designed especially for the No. 73 microscope. The objectives, bullet-shaped and color-anodized, are among the instrument’s most striking features. Their attractive colors serve a practical function of magnification identification as well as adding eye appeal to the overall appearance of the instrument. The double nosepiece of this microscope is supplied with the streamlined 43X high power objective, N.A. 0.53, as well as the 10X objective, N.A. 0.25. The objectives are parfocal and are locked in place. EYEPIECE : A 10X Huygenian eyepiece is provided and is standard with this instrument. A.I.
